Acne is not caused by "dirty" skin. It is the result of clogged pores infected with bacteria. Therefore, washing alone does not prevent acne. Washing with your typical cleanser simply serves to remove dirt and oil at the surface level. Some Cleansers do help treat acne if they contain acne treating ingredients. Although washing alone may not prevent acne, washing with the wrong product can aggravate acne making it worse.
NOTE: look for cleanser without Sodium laurel or lauryl sulfate (SLS)! There are a lot of negative issues associated with this common ingredient that can make Acne WORSE! The acne cleansers from murad and Exposed Skin Care are good SLS FREE choices. Read their reviews HERE.
Keeping your face clean requires you wash it no more than twice a day unless it's absolutely necessary. Skin must maintain the proper pH levels to remain healthy. Over-washing will make your face dry and irritated causing more breakouts. A high quality toner can be used following washing to assure proper PH is maintained.
Ever notice how red and raw your face looks after you really scrub it clean? I do not recommend this because such treatment will only serve to irritate the skin causing more breakouts. Let your skin relax!
Follow these recommendations:
- Work a small amount of cleanser into a lather in your hands
- Massage the lather on the surface of your skin in a circular motion over your entire face.
*Note* USE YOUR HANDS! Wash cloths may irritate the skin. Microfiber cloths, which are included in a select few leading treatment systems, are naturally good for the sensitive skin on your face
- Rinse well with warm water.
- Using a clean soft towel, gently pat dry your face.
Following immediately with an acne treatment toner can assist in improving skin tone and reducing breakouts
Remember, washing even with the best cleanser alone will not solve your acne problems. It is very important that you follow a full acne treatment program that treats acne in all ways.
